LONGEVITY TIPS
- Do not run the air conditioning system if it does
not work (that is, produce cold air). The system may be low on
refrigerant and therefore
lubricant.
Compressor parts could wear if
not properly lubricated.
- Use of air conditioning in very hot weather or
stop-and-go traffic could cause the engine to overheat. It places
additional drag on the engine and also decreases fuel economy at low speeds.
However, at highway speed, the air conditioning will decrease gas mileage less
than driving with all of the windows down, which increases wind drag.
- The air conditioning system dehumidifies the
passenger compartment air (since moisture from the recirculated air collects at
the evaporator), so it can be
run quickly before turning on the heater or defrosting/defogging the inside of
your windows in the winter. The dry air is easier to heat, although some
cars automatically turn on the air conditioning system when the temperature
control is set in the DEFROST position.
- Turn the air conditioning OFF before starting your
engine to reduce drag. Also, if your engine begins to overheat during
operation, turn off the air conditioning and turn on the heater to help draw
heat out of the cooling system.
